Scientists have officially identified a new species of monkey hidden deep within the tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking only the fifth new African monkey species to be discovered in the past 75 years.
The newly recognised primate, named Colobus congoensis, is distinguished by its striking pinkish-orange lips, black face and dark fur. It inhabits the dense rainforest canopy of Lomami National Park in central-eastern Congo.
Conservationists first spotted the unusual monkey in 2008, but only managed to capture a blurry photograph. A second sighting a decade later prompted an international team of researchers to launch a detailed study involving photography, audio recordings and genetic analysis.
Their findings, published in the journal PLOS One, confirmed that the monkey is genetically distinct from all previously known species.
Lead researcher Junior Amboko, a PhD student at Florida Atlantic University, described the discovery as an unforgettable experience.
“It was an amazing feeling to look into the face of an animal that so few people knew existed,” he said.
Although the species is new to science, local communities have long known about the monkey and refer to it as Likweli. Researchers interviewed residents in 52 nearby villages, but only people from eight villages reported ever seeing the elusive animal.
The monkey belongs to the colobus family, a group of tree-dwelling herbivores that lack thumbs and play an important ecological role by helping disperse seeds and support forest regeneration.
Researchers believe the species’ vivid facial colouring may help individuals recognise one another or attract potential mates. The monkey is also known for its distinctive roaring call, which is often heard long before the animal is seen high in the forest canopy.
Scientists believe Colobus congoensis has a limited distribution and survives only in a small area of suitable habitat. The monkeys are also hunted for bushmeat, raising concerns over their long-term survival.
Researchers hope that the species’ official scientific recognition will strengthen conservation efforts and lead to greater legal protection while further studies are carried out to estimate its population and better understand its behaviour.
