Sabah Police Consider K9 Units To Bolster Airport Security Against Drug Smuggling

Date:

The Sabah State Police are exploring the deployment of detection dogs as a strategic alternative to bolster security screenings at regional airports, primarily aimed at curbing the illicit smuggling of narcotics via air transport. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun stated that this measure would be implemented should existing scanning technology prove insufficient for comprehensive detection.

The proposal is part of a broader effort to ensure that screening processes remain both thorough and effective in response to evolving smuggling tactics.

This integrated approach involves a close partnership with the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), which has become a key strategic ally in fortifying the nation’s borders. During a press conference at the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) on Wednesday, Datuk Jauteh expressed pride in the current level of inter-agency cooperation, describing the relationship between the police and AKPS as a “brotherly” bond. He emphasised the necessity of such collaborations to enhance overall security across the state’s entry points.

While advanced scanning technology remains the primary method for airport inspections, the Commissioner explained that alternatives like detection dogs would be mobilised based on operational requirements on the ground. Discussions are currently underway with AKPS to ensure that electronic scanners are being utilised to their full potential. If gaps are identified in the digital screening process, K9 units will be stationed at airports to provide an additional layer of sensory detection.

Addressing potential cultural and religious sensitivities, particularly among Muslim travellers, Datuk Jauteh assured the public that specific protocols would be followed. The authorities are mindful of concerns regarding contact with the animals and are developing methods to ensure that canine saliva does not come into contact with passenger luggage. These precautionary measures are being integrated into the operational planning to maintain a balance between rigorous security and respect for public sensibilities.

The implementation of this plan is expected to significantly increase the efficiency of authorities in intercepting drug trafficking activities, which have become increasingly sophisticated. Datuk Jauteh confirmed that the specific procedures for this deployment are already being finalised within the current planning phase. By combining human expertise, technological tools, and biological detection capabilities, the Sabah police aim to create a more resilient barrier against cross-border crime.
