“Am I Your Maid?” M’sian Woman Questions Future After Boyfriend Tries to Pay Her RM10/hr for Chores

Date:

A Malaysian woman who believed that moving in with her boyfriend would strengthen their relationship has instead found herself questioning their future together, just two months after living under the same roof.

In an anonymous confession shared with local content creator Ah Lee, the woman said the couple had agreed to split household expenses such as rent, utilities, and daily costs equally — an arrangement she had no issue with.

However, problems soon surfaced when it came to housework. While finances were shared, she claimed she was left to handle all cleaning, tidying, and daily chores on her own.

When she finally raised the issue and asked her boyfriend to help out, she said he flatly refused. Instead, he allegedly offered to pay her RM10 per hour to do the housework, explaining that he did not want to use his “manpower” for chores.

The offer deeply upset her, as she felt it reduced her role in the relationship to that of paid help rather than an equal partner.

“I scolded him and asked if he thought I was his maid. I also told him RM10 per hour is too little,” she wrote.

The disagreement quickly escalated into a heated argument, with the woman claiming her boyfriend accused her of being money-minded for rejecting the arrangement — despite the couple having discussed plans to get married within the next year.

Feeling disrespected and unsupported, the woman said she is now uncertain about continuing the relationship, questioning whether she should move out or reconsider marriage altogether.

Commenting on the confession, Ah Lee said the relationship dynamic described sounded more like a roommate arrangement than a partnership built on mutual care. She also criticised the RM10-per-hour offer, noting that part-time domestic help in Malaysia typically earns between RM15 and RM20 an hour.

Ah Lee warned that using money to avoid shared responsibilities could signal deeper power and respect issues, especially when marriage is already being discussed.
