A bizarre case of mistaken identity unfolded in Thailand’s Chiang Rai province after a 48-year-old man appeared alive and well shortly after his family had held his funeral and buried what they believed to be his body.
According to reports, the man’s family had earlier been informed that he had died in Chiang Mai. Devastated by the news, relatives travelled to identify the body and subsequently collected the remains.
Due to their emotional state and the condition of the body, which made facial identification difficult, the family mistakenly claimed the wrong corpse. They then proceeded to conduct funeral rites in accordance with local traditions before burying the body.
Shortly after the burial, the man unexpectedly returned home unharmed, leaving his family in shock. Realising their grave mistake, relatives immediately sought help from rescue personnel.
The family later exhumed the buried body and handed it over to rescue teams for proper identification, so that the deceased could be returned to the correct family.
Authorities are now working to confirm the identity of the body and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
