A 23-year-old man sparked debate online after “sternly” declining leftover food offered by his girlfriend’s mother, leaving family members uncomfortable.
The man shared his story on Reddit’s popular forum “Am I the A——”, explaining that he, his 22-year-old girlfriend, and their parents attended a local trivia night where her parents brought an abundance of food. He admitted he “ate more than [his] fair share” and said the evening went well—until it was time to go.
As everyone was packing up, his girlfriend’s mother offered them the remaining food. The man said they didn’t have enough fridge space and politely declined. However, the mom insisted, claiming she had brought extra specifically for them. Despite his initial refusal, she continued to push, even handing food to his girlfriend.
Growing frustrated, the man said he finally responded more firmly, telling her, “I said no, please respect that.” The room reportedly fell silent, and his father later advised him that “it’s a gift” and should’ve been accepted politely.
The man eventually took the food to avoid further conflict but threw most of it away. He asked Reddit whether he handled the situation poorly.
Responses were mixed. Some users believed his tone crossed the line, explaining that while the mother was pushy, accepting the food and quietly discarding it would have been the kinder choice. One commenter wrote, “Taking home a bit of extra food and throwing it out is such a trivial burden… Listen to your dad. YTA.”
Others, however, defended him, arguing that boundaries matter: “People have to learn that no means no… it’s fine to get a bit more stern.”
As one user put it, “You chose the wrong hill to die on. Good luck fixing this mess,” while another suggested a simpler future response: “Just say ‘no thank you, goodnight everyone’ and walk out.”
