A Hong Kong netizen has lodged a complaint with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) after allegedly finding what appeared to be a cockroach at the bottom of a drink purchased from a COMEBUYTEA outlet in Mong Kok.
According to a post shared on social media platform Threads, the incident occurred on Tuesday (Jan 27) at a COMEBUYTEA branch in MOKO New Century Plaza. The customer said she noticed an unusual texture while finishing her drink and initially thought it was aloe vera residue. However, after spitting it out, she realised it resembled a cockroach.
The customer subsequently reported the matter to the FEHD.
In response to enquiries from Yahoo News, the FEHD confirmed that officers conducted an inspection at the outlet the following day and discovered unsanitary conditions in the food preparation area. The department said it would prosecute the person in charge of the premises.
COMEBUYTEA told Yahoo News on Jan 29 that food safety and hygiene are top priorities for the brand, with daily cleaning procedures enforced at all outlets. The company added that the MOKO branch was temporarily closed on Jan 28 to undergo enhanced cleaning and full disinfection by a professional cleaning company, with relevant reports obtained for record and follow-up.
The complainant said she purchased the drink at about 5.34pm on Jan 27. The beverage contained light oolong tea, lychee juice and aloe vera, with no added sugar and less ice.
