Tragic End for Greyhound “Hero” After 8 Days of Rooftop Rescue Effort in Penang

Date:

The tense rooftop rescue mission that captured the hearts of residents and animal lovers ended in heartbreak. The Greyhound, affectionately named “Hero,” has tragically died after falling from the 17th floor of Villa Kejora Apartment.

The dog had been stranded on the rooftop for nearly eight days, too frightened to move or trust rescuers despite the combined efforts of 4PAWS (Penang Animal Welfare Society), the Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defence Force, Penang Island City Council, IAPWA, volunteers, and concerned residents.

Animal Communicator David Yim Boon Leong shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, stating, “With deep heartbreak and sorrow, Hero has tragically fallen from the 17th floor and has passed away. Our rescue mission has failed. We are truly sorry.”

A funeral service has been arranged for Hero at My Pet Funeral – Penang Pet Cremation 槟城宠物善终 / 宠物火化 Home, with a final farewell ceremony scheduled today from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm for those wishing to pay their respects. Further details will be provided by the organizers.

The story of Hero had united the community in a remarkable display of compassion, with volunteers traveling from far and wide to help. While the mission’s outcome is devastating, the rescue effort highlighted the dedication of animal welfare groups and the love of the Penang community for vulnerable animals.

As Hero is laid to rest, the hope remains that his story will inspire greater awareness and care for animals in peril, ensuring that no other creature faces such a lonely and tragic ordeal.
