A woman has turned to the internet for advice after discovering that her boyfriend of nearly seven years had developed feelings for a woman he met through online gaming, leaving her questioning whether to end their relationship before marriage.
In her post, the woman said the couple had already met each other’s parents and were beginning to look at houses in preparation for marriage. She had believed their relationship was stable until she discovered that her boyfriend was frequently playing games and chatting with a female gaming partner late into the night.
Their conversations had gradually extended beyond gaming, with the woman reportedly turning to him for emotional support whenever her cat fell ill or she encountered problems at work. On some occasions, she would even tell him that she missed him when they did not connect in the game for a day.
When confronted, the boyfriend insisted that their relationship was “purely innocent”. However, he admitted that he had gradually started caring about the other woman.
He reportedly told his girlfriend that the woman was cheerful, sweet and reminded him of what his girlfriend had been like when they first started dating.
He also complained that spending every day with his long-term partner had become predictable, describing his gaming sessions as a way to escape the routine of daily life.
Although he acknowledged developing feelings for the other woman, he argued that he had ultimately chosen to stay with his girlfriend, claiming that he would have ended their relationship if he had genuinely wanted to be with someone else.
He also questioned why his girlfriend was so upset, insisting that he had not done anything physically unfaithful.
The woman said his remarks left her furious and hurt, particularly because he appeared to be seeking the qualities he once admired in her from someone else.
She felt that the emotional attention, comfort and affection that should have been shared within their relationship were increasingly being directed towards another woman.
The couple eventually broke up but later reconciled because she struggled to let go of their seven years together.
Hoping to save the relationship, she lowered her expectations and told him she would try to move on from the incident as long as he stopped the flirtatious behaviour and maintained clear boundaries with the other woman.
However, her boyfriend said he could not bring himself to cut ties completely because he did not want to hurt his gaming partner.
He reportedly told his girlfriend that seeing the other woman upset at being suddenly ignored would make him feel uncomfortable, and asked whether he could continue playing games and chatting with her occasionally as friends.
The woman said she felt devastated by his response, especially because he appeared more concerned about hurting the other woman than the pain his own girlfriend was experiencing.
Whenever she brought up the issue, he reportedly became irritated and told her that if the relationship was making her unhappy, she could consider letting herself go.
His reaction left her questioning whether she was being too controlling by asking him to distance himself from the woman, or whether he was deliberately maintaining the situation in the hope that she would eventually be the one to end the relationship.
Despite seeing that he was also troubled by their arguments, she remained unsure whether she was fighting for their love or simply struggling to accept the possibility of losing seven years of investment.
Netizens urge her to prioritise herself
The post drew strong reactions from netizens, many of whom argued that the issue went beyond emotional infidelity and pointed to what they saw as a lack of consideration for the girlfriend’s feelings.
One commenter said the boyfriend had already crossed an important boundary by developing an emotional attachment to another woman, adding that his repeated comparisons between the two women could have left his girlfriend feeling inadequate.
Another urged her not to remain in the relationship simply because of the years they had spent together, warning that marrying someone who did not value her feelings could lead to years of self-doubt and emotional pain.
“Your future still has many more years ahead. If you tie yourself to someone who is unwilling to cherish you, you will only continue to get hurt,” the commenter wrote.
Others pointed out that it was better to discover the problem before marriage and having children, when separating could become more complicated.
One comment summed up the perceived double standard bluntly: “He cannot bear to hurt her, but he is willing to hurt you.”
Another netizen argued that the problem was not necessarily the female gaming partner, but the boyfriend’s unwillingness to establish boundaries, adding that another person could eventually take her place if his behaviour remained unchanged.
As the woman weighs her options, the central question remains whether the couple can rebuild trust when they disagree on what boundaries are necessary to protect their relationship.
