Woman Shocked To Learn Boyfriend Has No SPM After Five Months Of Dating, But Can’t Leave Him Because He’s Handsome

Date:

A Malaysian woman has gone viral after revealing that she only discovered her boyfriend did not have an SPM certificate five months into their relationship, sparking a heated debate about education, financial stability and compatibility in relationships.

In her social media post, the woman said she has been dating her boyfriend for almost a year. She holds a university degree and works in a corporate job, while her 26-year-old boyfriend earns a living as a full-time ride-hailing driver.

She explained that she initially believed he had completed SPM but did not pursue further studies due to health problems. However, after several months together, she found out that he had never obtained the qualification. She admitted she was taken aback, especially after realising he often became quiet whenever conversations turned to education. The revelation has since prompted many online users to discuss whether academic qualifications should play a major role when choosing a life partner.

Beyond his education, the woman said she was also worried about his financial situation. According to her, her boyfriend has very little savings and frequently struggles to make ends meet. She claimed she had bought him several necessities and gifts, including a watch, perfume and even motorcycle tyres because he could not afford them himself.

Despite considering ending the relationship, she said she felt guilty because her boyfriend suffers from health issues that sometimes prevent him from working, leaving him without any income. She also admitted that one reason she had remained in the relationship was because she found him physically attractive.

Her mother, however, had repeatedly advised her to choose someone with a similar educational background, adding to her uncertainty about their future together.

The post quickly drew mixed reactions online. Many netizens argued that not having an SPM certificate should not determine a person’s value or future success. Others, however, felt that the woman’s concerns extended beyond education, pointing instead to issues of financial responsibility, personal effort and long-term compatibility.

One commenter said education and occupation do not define an individual’s character, but a successful relationship requires honesty, commitment and shared goals. Another shared that their own father never obtained formal academic qualifications but still worked hard, bought a house and a car, and successfully provided for the family.

Following the flood of responses, the woman thanked netizens for their advice and said that although she was leaning towards ending the relationship, she still wanted the best for her boyfriend. She later asked whether anyone knew how he could retake the SPM examination, particularly Bahasa Melayu and History, noting that the current syllabus differs from previous years.

The discussion has since evolved into a broader conversation on whether educational qualifications, financial security or personal determination should carry the greatest weight when building a long-term relationship.
