Woman Sparks Debate After Boyfriend Asks Her To Pay For Petrol While Driving Her Own Car

Date:

A Malaysian woman has ignited an online debate after revealing that her boyfriend regularly asks her to pay for petrol whenever he drives her car during their dates.

In a social media post, the woman admitted she was unsure whether it was appropriate to ask her boyfriend to contribute towards fuel costs. She explained that although he usually drives whenever they go out together, they always use her car. Whenever they stop at a petrol station, however, he would ask her to pay for the fuel.

The woman said she did not necessarily object to paying, as the vehicle belonged to her and she would continue using the remaining fuel after their outings. Nevertheless, she questioned whether the arrangement was entirely fair, especially since her boyfriend was the one using the car throughout their dates.

She also pointed out that her boyfriend normally pays for their meals, leaving her uncertain about whether covering the petrol costs was a reasonable way to share their dating expenses.

Her post quickly attracted mixed reactions from netizens. Some felt the arrangement depended on the distance travelled, suggesting it would be reasonable for the boyfriend to contribute towards petrol for longer journeys, while shorter trips could justify her paying since he had already covered the cost of the meal.

Others encouraged the woman to communicate openly with her boyfriend instead of making assumptions, saying couples should discuss how to split expenses such as fuel, meals and entertainment to avoid misunderstandings later in the relationship.

However, many commenters believed the boyfriend should have voluntarily offered to pay for petrol, particularly because he was driving her vehicle. Some argued that doing so would simply be the considerate thing to do, while others warned that unresolved disagreements over finances during dating could become more significant after marriage.

Responding to the discussion, the woman clarified that she was not trying to be overly calculating about money. Instead, she said past experiences had made her cautious and she was worried about being taken advantage of again, prompting her to seek opinions before raising the matter with her boyfriend.
