On Sunday, Feb. 1, 20th Century Studios released a brand-new first look at the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 hit. In a 30-second teaser, the stars trade witty barbs as their characters reunite 20 years later. Emily Blunt’s character quips to Andy (Hathaway), “You’ve changed, you’re much more confident. You kept those eyebrows, though, didn’t you?”
The studio teased the full trailer with a simple Instagram post: “Trailer tonight. That’s all.”
The original film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel, follows ambitious assistant Andy Sachs (Hathaway) as she navigates the high-pressure world of fashion under the icy editorial eye of Miranda Priestly (Streep).
According to Variety, the sequel will see Priestly grappling with the decline of traditional magazine publishing while facing off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive at a luxury group controlling the advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.
Alongside the core four, the film also stars Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, and Conrad Ricamora. Returning from the original, director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna bring the world of Runway back to life.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Blunt, who reprises her role as Miranda’s loyal assistant Emily Charlton, teased the ongoing tension between her and Streep’s character. “Why are Meryl and I so mean to each other in every movie we do? We always have beef with each other. Let’s hope we remedy it. I’m not sure,” she joked.
Reflecting on returning to the story after two decades, Blunt told PORTER magazine, “In a blink, it’s gone bye.” She added, “Making Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t just doing a movie. It has deep emotional roots for a lot of us.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters on May 1.
