Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Confirmed for The Mummy 4, Set for 2028 Release

Date:

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their iconic roles in the fourth chapter of Universal Pictures’ The Mummy series. The duo first starred together in the original 1999 adventure film and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, with Fraser also appearing in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Universal has slated the new film for release on May 19, 2028. While the director has yet to be officially confirmed, reports suggest Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will helm the project. The screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, known for Orphan: First Kill, although the storyline remains under wraps.

Series producer Sean Daniel will oversee production alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment. Fraser, together with Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart from Hivemind, will serve as executive producers. This marks another collaboration between Universal and Radio Silence, who previously worked together on the 2024 vampire film Abigail.

Fraser reprises action hero Rick O’Connell, while Weisz returns as his on-screen wife Evelyn O’Connell. Following the trilogy’s conclusion, a 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise failed to perform commercially, stalling Universal’s plans for the Dark Universe.

After reports in November 2025 indicated Fraser and Weisz were negotiating their return, Fraser, 57, teased fans that “anything’s possible” for the franchise. Speaking to Deadline, he acknowledged the enduring fanbase: “We were at a fan convention in Minnesota, signing autographs and answering questions in front of 3,000 people. It was overwhelming – the love is real.”

Fraser also recalled a near-fatal stunt from the original film during an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I was accidentally choked with a rope during a scene… my toes were on the ground, but I had nowhere to go. My elbow hit my ear, gravel ended up in my teeth, and everything went sideways,” he recounted, highlighting the physical risks behind the action-packed series.

With Fraser and Weisz back, fans can expect the classic adventure, action, and chemistry that made the original films a global hit.
