A beauty influencer from China reportedly lost around 140,000 followers after a technical glitch during a livestream briefly revealed her unfiltered appearance to viewers.
The incident, which quickly went viral, has sparked renewed debate over beauty standards and the growing reliance on digital enhancements across social media platforms.
Clips circulating widely on platforms such as TikTok and Threads show the unnamed influencer broadcasting live to her audience. At the start of the session, her face appeared heavily enhanced by a digital filter, presenting a brighter complexion, smoother skin texture and more refined, youthful facial features.
However, during a sudden movement, the filter reportedly malfunctioned and switched off momentarily.
Within seconds, viewers were able to see her natural appearance, which showed a darker skin tone and more mature facial features compared to the digitally altered version. The footage captured her attempting to end the livestream abruptly after the unintentional reveal.
According to online reports, the significant drop in followers occurred shortly after the clips began spreading across various platforms.
The episode has since triggered widespread discussion about unrealistic beauty expectations shaped by social media. In recent years, digital filters have become increasingly sophisticated, often blurring the line between edited imagery and reality.
Despite the backlash, many netizens came forward to defend the influencer, arguing that she looked more attractive without digital enhancement.
“She is actually beautiful without the filter,” one user commented.
Another wrote: “The filter looked unnatural. Without it, she looks far better.”
Such responses suggest a growing segment of online users who favour authenticity over heavily edited appearances. Nevertheless, critics continue to warn that excessive use of filters may distort perceptions of beauty and negatively affect users’ self-esteem, particularly among younger audiences exposed to idealised online images daily.
