After more than a decade of ghost hunting on screen, Vera Farmiga is leaving The Conjuring universe a little bruised — literally.
The actress, who has played real-life psychic investigator Lorraine Warren alongside Patrick Wilson’s Ed Warren since 2013, told E! News she’s once again walked away from set with unexplained injuries while filming the franchise’s swan song, The Conjuring: Last Rites.
“Yeah, I get battered,” Farmiga admitted, sharing a photo of a cross-shaped bruise on her leg. “That happens every time we do it. It’s just these inexplicable bruising shapes that occur on my body. It just is what it is.”
Farmiga said she and Wilson rarely speak publicly about odd happenings around the productions. “We don’t like talking about it,” she explained. “We’re caught between a rock and a hard place—sensationalizing this and selling a movie.”
The pair’s final outing as the Warrens tackles the notorious Smurl haunting, a Pennsylvania case from the 1970s and ’80s involving violent and supernatural claims. Director Michael Chaves and producers James Wan and Peter Safran return to steer the story, which Farmiga warns is their most emotional yet.
“Brace yourself, man,” she teased. “You’re gonna jump and scream, but you’re going to shed a lot of tears, too. You’re going to be raw. Get those Kleenex—the ones with lotion.”
Wilson admitted the farewell feels heavier than past projects. “It did feel like, ‘Wow, we’re coming to the end of something,’” he said. “This is the most that these characters have ever been through — arguably, the most that we’ve ever been through on this franchise.”
The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to mark the duo’s final chapter of on-screen demonology — and, if Farmiga’s experience is any sign, perhaps one last unexplained bruise.
