James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash Surpasses US$1 Billion at Global Box Office

Date:

James Cameron’s science-fiction fantasy Avatar: Fire and Ash has crossed the US$1 billion (RM4.05 billion) mark in global box office revenue, marking the director’s fourth film to achieve this milestone.

Walt Disney Studios reported on Sunday that the film has earned US$1.03 billion worldwide. The movie, which returns audiences to the visually stunning world of Pandora, continues the story of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they cope with the loss of their son.

Fire and Ash is the third installment in the Avatar series, which has collectively grossed US$6.35 billion globally. The series began with the original Avatar in 2009, which earned US$2.9 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film in nominal dollars, and followed by Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, which made over US$2.3 billion and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, noted that the films’ breathtaking 3D visuals make them “tailor made” for the cinema experience, consistently drawing audiences to theaters.

The latest installment earned US$306 million in the US and Canada and US$777.1 million internationally during its holiday-season release. Cameron’s first billion-dollar blockbuster was Titanic (1997), which has grossed nearly US$2.3 billion worldwide.
