Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, is expected to be detained soon as he was the last person seen with Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, who was found dead on October 22 in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur.
According to police, Namewee was with the 31-year-old woman at around 1:40 p.m. in a room at Banyan Tree Hotel, Jalan Conlay, before he was arrested for drug possession and use. He was later released after pleading not guilty to the drug-related charges in court on October 24.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that while the case was initially classified as sudden death (SDR), investigators have now reclassified it as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code due to suspicious circumstances.
“At this stage, the investigation is ongoing from all angles, including the last person who was with the victim,” said Fadil. “We will review all movements of the victim and the individuals involved to determine whether Namewee is indeed a suspect.”
Police have already recorded statements from hotel staff and security personnel and are tracing the movements of both the victim and Namewee from the airport to the hotel.
The authorities are now awaiting post-mortem and toxicology reports to determine the exact cause of death.
Fadil added that the victim, who entered Malaysia via KLIA1 on October 20, was scheduled to return to Taiwan on October 24.
Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the nearest police station.
Hsien Yun Hsin’s body was discovered lying in a bathtub at the hotel. Her remains were later sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for autopsy.
As of now, Namewee has not been detained.
