Local rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known by his stage name Namewee, was arrested by police after allegedly possessing and consuming drugs at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on October 22.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said a team from the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) detained the 42-year-old artist around 4:30 p.m. during an inspection at the hotel.
“During the search, officers found nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy, weighing approximately 5.12 grams. The suspect was then taken to the Dang Wangi police station for further investigation. Initial urine screening tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC,” Fadil said in a statement.
He added that the suspect was remanded for two days before being charged in court on October 24 with two offenses under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 — one under Section 39A(1) for drug possession and another under Section 15(1)(a) for drug use.
Namewee pleaded not guilty to both charges, and the court granted bail of RM4,000 for each charge with one local surety. The case has been scheduled for mention on December 18.
