Rihanna Perfumes Pulled From UK Shelves Over Fertility-Linked Chemicals

Date:

Two fragrances linked to singer Rihanna have been withdrawn from sale after concerns emerged that certain batches may contain chemicals prohibited in cosmetics across the UK and European Union.

Discount retailer Savers issued a recall for specific batches of Kiss by Rihanna and RiRi by Rihanna perfumes after testing revealed the presence of Lyral and Lilial—synthetic fragrance compounds that were banned in 2022 over potential risks to fertility and foetal development.

Customers who purchased the affected products are being advised to return them for a full refund. The recall applies to Kiss by Rihanna with batch code 0608940572252 and RiRi by Rihanna with batch code 0608940560389.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Savers confirmed that the perfumes contained hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde and butylphenyl methylpropional, substances that are no longer permitted for use in cosmetic products within the UK.

“Savers have issued a recall of the above fragrance lines as some have been found to contain ingredients that are prohibited from sale in the UK,” the spokesperson said, adding that customers can return the products to any Savers store for a refund.

The retailer stressed that only the specified batches are affected, encouraging customers who are uncertain about their purchase to consult store staff for assistance. The company also apologised for any inconvenience caused by the recall.

Concerns Over Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals

Health experts have long warned about the risks linked to certain fragrance chemicals, particularly those classified as endocrine disruptors. These substances can interfere with the body’s hormonal system and have been associated with conditions such as obesity, diabetes and developmental problems.

Scientists are especially concerned about the potential impact on the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ in the neck responsible for regulating hormones that control metabolism, growth and reproductive health.

Despite regulatory bans on specific compounds, researchers say many fragrances still contain complex chemical mixtures. A single perfume can include dozens or even hundreds of ingredients designed to enhance scent strength and longevity.

Previous Perfume Recalls

The recall comes after other fragrance products were removed from shelves last year due to similar concerns. Perfumes including Hello by Lionel Richie and Hot by United Colors of Benetton were also withdrawn after restricted chemicals linked to fertility issues were detected.

Consumer safety groups say the latest recall highlights the importance of stricter monitoring within the cosmetics industry, particularly as fragrances remain one of the most chemically complex products sold to the public.

Authorities continue to urge consumers to check batch numbers and follow recall notices to minimise potential exposure to banned ingredients.
