The Saw franchise is officially returning for an 11th instalment after years of delays, with a new director and writing team now attached to the long-awaited horror sequel.
The announcement was made through the franchise’s official X account on Thursday, with a short video showing the iconic Billy the Puppet riding his signature tricycle past a script labelled “UNTITLED SAW”.
The script also revealed that Mike P. Nelson will direct the upcoming film.
“Did you miss me?” read the caption accompanying the announcement.
Lionsgate, which has distributed the franchise since the original Saw was released in 2004, will remain on board for the 11th film.
Blumhouse will serve as the primary producer through its subsidiary Atomic Monster, following the company’s acquisition of Twisted Pictures’ stake in the Saw franchise in 2025.
The move also gives original Saw director James Wan a more substantial creative role in the new instalment. Wan directed the first film but stepped away from a key creative role after Saw II.
Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock, known for their work on Dune: Prophecy, will write the screenplay.
Wan said finding the right director was important to ensure the new film remained faithful to the world established by the original.
“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honour that world,” Wan said.
Nelson, meanwhile, teased a story featuring the mystery and brutal ideas that have become hallmarks of the franchise.
“Let the games begin!” he said.
The latest announcement comes three years after Saw X, which was released in 2023.
Saw 11 was initially scheduled to hit cinemas in September 2024 before being delayed by a year to September 2025. However, the film never arrived on the 2025 release calendar.
Nelson is best known for directing the horror film Silent Night, Deadly Night, as well as the 2021 Wrong Turn reboot. He is also attached to the upcoming survival monster horror film Beware Boiúna, starring Logan Marshall-Green.
No release date for Saw 11 has been announced yet.
