Sony to Develop Film Based on Global Sensation Labubu Dolls

Date:

The wildly popular Labubu dolls — the quirky, sharp-toothed collectibles that have sparked a worldwide craze — may soon make their debut on the big screen, according to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday (Nov 14).

Sony Pictures has reportedly secured a deal to develop a movie centred on the iconic characters created by China’s Pop Mart. The project is still in its early development phase, and producers have yet to decide whether the film will be live-action or animated.

Labubu dolls surged in popularity this year, boosted by celebrity fans such as Rihanna and Blackpink’s Lisa. Demand has been so intense that shoppers have queued for hours to purchase the toys, which are sold in “blind boxes” that conceal which figurine is inside.

Sony’s involvement follows its track record with major franchises, including the Jumanji films and the animated Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters.
