Taron Egerton has finally addressed long-standing rumors about him possibly becoming the next James Bond — and fans might be disappointed. Despite being a fan favorite for the role since 2019, the Rocketman and Kingsman star says he doesn’t think he’s the right fit to step into the shoes of the suave secret agent.
“I don’t think I’m a good choice for it, I think I’m too messy for that,” Egerton told Collider. “I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure, but I think I wouldn’t be good at it.”
Egerton, 35, added that the role would be better suited for a “cool, younger” actor and confirmed that no one from the franchise has officially approached him. Despite that, he didn’t rule out taking on another major commercial project in the future — though he remained tight-lipped on what that might be.
Taron is best known for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman and for playing Eggsy in the Kingsman films, which parody traditional spy movie tropes — making him a natural fan pick for 007. Even Sir Roger Moore’s son Geoffrey had previously backed him for the part.
Speculation about who will take over as Bond has been swirling since Daniel Craig’s final appearance in No Time to Die (2021). With Amazon now holding full creative control of the franchise after acquiring MGM for $8.5 billion, the race to cast the next Bond has only intensified.
Currently, Bullet Train actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the frontrunner, with Coral bookmakers listing him at 9-4 odds. Callum Turner, Henry Cavill, and Jack Lowden are also in the running.
Adding to the excitement, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has signed on to direct the upcoming Bond film, which remains untitled. He will also serve as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe. The film’s production will be helmed by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, following the studio’s split from longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
While the future of Bond remains uncertain, one thing’s clear: Taron Egerton won’t be suiting up for MI6 anytime soon.
