More than 26 years after David and Victoria Beckham first fell for each other, the Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer is opening up about the secret to their enduring marriage: growing and evolving together.
“So often in relationships, one says to the other, ‘You’ve changed.’ Well, of course you’ve changed!” Victoria told ELLE in a cover interview published Sept. 18. “You’re a different person at 20 than you are at 50.”
She credited mutual support as another key factor. “He believed in me when a lot of people didn’t,” said the 51-year-old, who launched her fashion line in 2008. “At times I’ve been a laughingstock, with people not taking my business seriously, but he always believed in me.”
Victoria has also stood by David, including during a turbulent period in 2004 when his former personal assistant alleged an affair while he was playing for Real Madrid. The Inter Miami co-owner denied the claims, but the couple—married since 1999—have spoken about how the media storm tested their relationship.
“It was the hardest period for us,” Victoria recalled in Netflix’s 2023 docuseries Beckham. “It felt like the world was against us… and we didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad.”
David echoed her sentiments on the show: “To see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we’re fighters. We needed to fight for each other and for our family. What we had was worth fighting for.”
The couple share four children—Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14—and continue to publicly celebrate the partnership they’ve built since first meeting in 1997.
