Government Reallocates Unspent RM150mil Sara Funds to Support Vulnerable Communities

Date:

Unutilised funds from the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) untuk Semua programme will be redirected to targeted initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring public funds continue to benefit those most in need.

In a statement today, the Finance Ministry (MOF) said approximately RM150 million in unused Sara untuk Semua funds would be channelled into programmes assisting vulnerable communities, following the strong uptake of the assistance last year.

“The government has honoured its commitment to ensure that unspent Sara untuk Semua funds are redirected to initiatives that safeguard the welfare of vulnerable groups,” the ministry said.

Among the initiatives to receive funding are support for shelter residents, including victims of domestic violence, assistance for students with disabilities and special needs, the procurement of medical devices for vulnerable groups, and the expansion of the Dapur Siswa programme to help underprivileged students access daily meals.

The ministry said the reallocation reflects the government’s emphasis on responsible fiscal management and targeted social assistance, ensuring aid continues to have an impact even after the initial distribution period.

In the same statement, MOF also confirmed a significant expansion of Sara Bulanan in 2026, with 8.1 million recipients set to benefit, compared with 5.4 million recipients in 2025.

The programme will receive an allocation of RM8 billion, up from RM5 billion last year, with eligible recipients receiving monthly credits ranging from RM50 to RM200.

Disbursements will begin on Jan 9 for 3.7 million households and 1.3 million senior citizens without spouses, followed by payments to 3.1 million single individuals on Jan 16.

MOF noted that Sara Bulanan recorded near-full utilisation in 2025, including in rural areas, demonstrating its effectiveness in helping recipients meet basic needs.

To further improve access, the ministry said the number of participating small retail outlets will be expanded to 10,000 nationwide by the end of 2026, up from more than 3,000 outlets at the end of 2025.

“This expansion will complement existing supermarket chains and ensure recipients, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, can conveniently use their Sara credits,” it said.

The ministry added that the government will continue refining the programme to ensure social assistance remains inclusive, efficient and responsive to the needs of the rakyat.
