The Johor State Education Department has pledged firm action in the case of a 10-year-old Year Four pupil who was twice bullied, leaving him with memory loss and brain trauma.
State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the department is finalising follow-up measures, including engagement with the victim’s family and disciplinary steps against the perpetrators.
“Everything is being handled by the department. Several actions will be taken against the perpetrators, but the process is still being finalised. It’s not just the student who requires counselling — the family also needs support to overcome the trauma together,” he said after visiting the victim at a private hospital’s pediatric ward today.
Also present were Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Khairin-Nisa Ismail and State Education Director Mohd Hanafi Samad.
Aznan added that he had chaired a Johor State Special Anti-Bullying Committee meeting in Iskandar Puteri, co-chaired with Khairin-Nisa, as part of a coordinated effort to address the escalating bullying issue.
The committee outlined a comprehensive action plan involving schools, teachers, parents, and communities, including phased awareness campaigns and intervention programmes. “We will follow the SOPs set by the Education Ministry but will intensify awareness efforts, training, and programmes to address bullying misconduct,” Aznan said.
The case sparked outrage after it was revealed that the 10-year-old, a cancer survivor who has been battling adenoid cystic carcinoma for the past two years, was left with brain injuries after two alleged assaults this year.
The first incident reportedly occurred on February 21 at a religious school in Skudai, when the victim was attacked by a 12-year-old schoolmate after rejecting a crush involving the victim’s elder sister. The assault involved kicking, punching, slamming his head, and forcing him to strip.
