14-Year-Old Faces Court Over Teacher Assault, Released on RM1,000 Bail

Date:

A 14-year-old boy who admitted to punching a teacher at a secondary school in Kajang has been released on bail. His parents posted the RM1,000 bail with one surety following proceedings at the magistrate’s court on Monday. The Form One student, whose identity is withheld due to his age, is now required to undergo a social assessment by the Welfare Department, with the report to be submitted to the court before sentencing on September 11.

The teenager was charged during a closed-door hearing in the presence of his parents. The media was barred from attending. The charge, under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail, a fine up to RM2,000, or both.

The incident, which occurred at 4.48pm on July 28, stemmed from the student allegedly skipping physical education class. Kajang police chief ACP Naazron Abd Yusof said the teacher had reprimanded the boy, leading to a confrontation in which the student punched and threatened the 29-year-old teacher in front of other teachers and students. A video of the altercation has since gone viral.

The student was arrested and held on a two-day remand after the teacher lodged a police report. His mother, expressing concern for her only child’s future, said her son had shown remorse and apologised for his actions.
