A 17-year-old schoolgirl, Lainie Williams, described by locals as the “loveliest person,” was found dead in a pool of blood at her home, while her mother, Rhian Stephens, 38, was injured in an alleged knife attack. Rhian managed to escape and is receiving treatment in hospital.
An 18-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police launched a murder investigation after receiving a 999 call reporting the attacks at a semi-detached home in Wheatley Place, near Blackwood, South Wales.
The attack occurred at around 7 a.m., before sunrise, shocking the tight-knit community. Neighbours reported hearing sirens and seeing helicopters before police arrived. Local resident Michelle Davies said, “It is terrible. That poor girl had everything to live for and now she is gone. At least the mother survived, but she will never get over what she witnessed.”
Gwent Police confirmed that firearms officers attended the scene as a precaution. Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Air Ambulance were also called. Lainie was pronounced dead at the scene, and her mother is being treated in hospital.
Detective Superintendent Philip O’Connell said, “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Residents may see an increased police presence while we carry out further enquiries. Anyone with information should contact us.”
Cefn Fforest Councillor Shane Williams added, “We are all deeply shocked and saddened. Our thoughts are with the family, and we hope for a full recovery for the woman who was hospitalised. Incidents like this are highly unusual in our area and understandably frightening for residents.”
