A 21-year-old driver who crashed into a bollard and barrier gate at one of Istana Negara’s entrances early this morning is expected to be charged with drink driving, Kuala Lumpur traffic police confirmed.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the man was driving a Toyota Vios from the Bukit Damansara direction when the crash occurred at Jalan Changkat Semantan at about 3.30am.
No injuries were reported, but the front of the vehicle, as well as the bollard and barrier gate, sustained damage.
Police conducted a site inspection, reviewed CCTV footage, recorded the driver’s statement and carried out a breathalyser test.
According to Mohd Zamzuri, the test showed the driver had an alcohol content of 166mg per 100ml of blood, exceeding the legal limit. The driver was subsequently detained.
Investigation papers have been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers, which instructed that the driver be charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving with alcohol levels above the prescribed limit.
If convicted, first-time offenders face up to two years’ imprisonment and a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000. Repeat offenders may be jailed for up to five years and fined between RM20,000 and RM50,000.
The driver is expected to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court today.
