22 Dead, 55 Injured After Train Crashes Into Fallen Crane in Thailand

Date:

At least 22 people have died and 55 others were injured in a major rail disaster in Thailand after a large construction crane collapsed onto the tracks and was subsequently struck by a moving high-speed train, authorities say.

The deadly incident occurred on the morning of January 14 in Sikhio, Nakhon Ratchasima, at around 9:45am, when the train collided with the crane that had fallen across its path.

According to The Nation Thailand, approximately 190 passengers were reportedly trapped inside the mangled carriages following the impact.

Emergency responders, including medical teams and rescue workers, rushed to the scene and have been using iron cutters and heavy equipment to free passengers trapped in the wreckage. Photos shared by Fire & Rescue Thailand show the severe damage to the train cars and the massive crane lodged against the structure, complicating rescue efforts.

Rescuers described the operation as challenging due to how the crane overlapped with the train’s frame.

Officials are currently investigating how the crane came to collapse onto the tracks and are working to piece together the cause of the tragic accident.
