A 22-wheel trailer truck crashed into multiple vehicles on the Burapha Withi Expressway in Bang Samak subdistrict, Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao, at about 4.30pm on April 4, leaving 16 people injured and bringing traffic to a standstill.
Police, rescue teams and emergency responders were deployed to kilometre 37 on the Chon Buri-bound stretch, where they found a white trailer truck had collided with a four-wheel lorry before triggering a chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles.
The impact left the smaller lorry severely damaged, with its 55-year-old driver, Chalee, thrown from the vehicle and seriously injured. The trailer driver, 27-year-old Kiatisak, was also trapped inside the cab before being rescued by emergency personnel.
Authorities said the trailer went on to hit two employee shuttle vans and three cars, with debris and damaged vehicles scattered across all lanes of the expressway. In total, 16 people were injured in the incident.
Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene before transporting 14 victims to Chularat 11 Hospital and two others to Bang Pakong Hospital for further treatment.
Witnesses reported heavy traffic congestion prior to the crash, saying the trailer appeared to be travelling at speed before striking the lorry and losing control, resulting in a multi-vehicle pile-up that blocked the entire expressway for nearly an hour.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident as efforts continue to determine what led to the loss of control and the subsequent collision.
