A 22-year-old man, Ally Peterson Peter Chong, was fined RM2,500, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court today for purchasing an illegal lottery ticket.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan handed down the sentence after Ally pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, imprisonment up to six months, or both. The offence took place at an electronics store on Jalan Belatok on June 15, 2025, at approximately 1 pm. During a police operation named Op Dadu, officers inspected Ally, who was behind the counter, on suspicion of illegal gambling involvement. They discovered illegal gambling elements on his mobile phone and arrested him.
The police also seized a Nokia phone, a handwritten note believed to contain unlicensed lottery numbers, and RM47 in cash. A gambling expert’s analysis confirmed that the phone contained illegal gambling content, leading to the charge under the Common Gaming House Act. Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid prosecuted the case, while Ally was unrepresented in court.
