22-Year-Old Man Dies After Jumping From Third-Floor Courthouse Window to Avoid Jail

Date:

A 22-year-old man, Tyquan Richardson, tragically died after jumping from a third-floor courthouse window in Georgia in a desperate attempt to avoid going back to jail.

According to authorities, Richardson had been facing charges for intent to supply marijuana and possession of one ounce of the drug. Police later discovered a loaded handgun outside the courthouse among paperwork bearing his name, prompting officers to arrest him.

When Richardson realized what was happening, he allegedly broke free from police custody and charged headfirst through a plate-glass window on the third floor, plunging nearly 40 feet to the concrete below. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m.

Investigators said Richardson appeared to panic at the thought of returning to jail. “He was somewhat concerned about what this gun charge would do, based on his record,” a police spokesperson said.

At the time, Richardson was on bail for previous offenses, including concealing a firearm, which meant another gun-related conviction could have sent him back to prison. He had also been briefly held on remand for 15 days over his drug charge before his death.

Witnesses described the horrifying moment the window shattered. “We were just hanging out before class and suddenly there was a huge boom,” said student Rehmet Khan, who saw the incident unfold.

Authorities confirmed that Richardson had a history of prior convictions, including aggravated assault and battery in 2013. Fulton County Deputy Sheriff Dan Cochran said, “Everyone’s in shock. It happened so fast.”

The incident left the courthouse community stunned — a tragic reminder of how fear and desperation can end in irreversible loss.
