41-Year-Old Woman Charged After Approaching Sultan Nazrin During Parade

Date:

A 41-year-old woman who approached the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the state-level National Day parade was charged in the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court today.

Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, 41, faces charges of criminal violence against the Sultan. According to the charge sheet, the alleged offence occurred in front of the Ipoh City Hall on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab at around 8:20 a.m. on 31 August.

She is charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine if convicted.

Nurhaswani appeared calm in court and nodded in understanding as the charges were read out before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul requested that no plea be recorded, citing an initial report from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta indicating that the accused suffers from schizophrenia.

“The prosecution requests an order under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code to obtain a full psychiatric evaluation to determine her mental fitness and suitability to stand trial,” he said.

The defence lawyer, M. Saravanan, did not object to the request.

Magistrate Mohd Harith ordered Nurhaswani to undergo further psychiatric assessment and instructed that a full report be submitted before proceedings continue. No bail was granted, and the accused was ordered to be treated at the hospital. The case is scheduled to be mentioned again on 8 October.

Earlier media reports stated that the woman had entered the stage area from the side and approached Sultan Nazrin before being apprehended by security personnel. She has a prior history of drug-related offences and psychiatric treatment.
