In Japan, achieving “financial independence, retire early” (FIRE) is a dream for many. But for one 48-year-old man, Tanaka Makoto (pseudonym), the reality after retirement turned out to be far lonelier than expected. After saving ¥100 million (about RM3 million), he quit his IT job thinking he’d enjoy a carefree life — only to fall into deep emptiness within six months.
Tanaka had worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, living frugally and investing wisely to reach his goal. When he finally retired, life seemed perfect — mornings spent at cafés with books, spontaneous road trips, mountain hikes on sunny days, and even treating himself to a luxury watch to celebrate his newfound freedom. “Every day felt like Sunday,” he said.
However, his joy quickly faded. “Not being bound by work also means no one needs you,” Tanaka admitted. Watching his former colleagues take on new projects while he drifted without purpose made him feel isolated and irrelevant. Loneliness grew until he realized his problem wasn’t money — it was the lack of human connection.
One evening, while dining at a neighborhood izakaya, he was moved by the warmth and laughter inside. That moment changed everything. He decided to start working there — earning just ¥1,580 (about RM32) per hour — but regaining something priceless: a sense of belonging. “It feels like being back in my student days,” he said. “I just focus on serving customers sincerely, without being chased by numbers anymore.”
Experts note that Tanaka’s story reveals the other side of FIRE: money can provide security, but not happiness. Studies show that once annual income exceeds ¥8–10 million (around RM250,000–RM310,000), happiness no longer rises with wealth. Ultimately, beyond financial comfort, humans still crave love, purpose, and connection.
