Penang police issued 582 summonses and seized 26 motorcycles for various offences during the 2026 New Year’s Eve Integrated Operation conducted from 8.30pm on Dec 31 until the early hours of today.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the statewide operation, which comprised “Op Samseng Jalanan” and “Op Mabuk”, involved 165 police officers and personnel, with support from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Department of Environment (DOE).
He said the majority of offences involved motorcycles, including failure to display registration numbers, absence of “P” (Probationary) stickers, unauthorised structural modifications, and the use of exhaust systems that did not comply with legal specifications.
“During the operation, one individual was arrested under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol, after breathalyser tests recorded readings above the permitted limit,” he said in a statement tonight.
Azizee added that a total of 677 individuals and 626 vehicles were inspected statewide. The JPJ issued 192 summonses, while the AADK recorded one positive drug test out of 41 screenings conducted.
He further said the DOE carried out 35 sound level tests, resulting in 20 re-test notices and 20 compounds being issued to vehicles found violating noise regulations.
According to Azizee, the operation aimed to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow, as well as to curb road hooliganism and prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the New Year celebrations, with an estimated 500,000 vehicles entering the island.
