67-Year-Old Pedestrian Fatally Hit in Suspected Drunk Driving Incident

Date:

An elderly woman tragically died after being hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Tanjung Tokong on Jalan Lembah Permai late Sunday night.

The 67-year-old victim was confirmed dead at the scene around 11.30 pm after being thrown onto the road following the collision.

Northeast District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad, said the accident involved a female pedestrian and a 51-year-old foreign male driver of the SUV.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the SUV was traveling from Jalan Mount Erskine towards Jalan Tanjung Bungah when it struck the woman, who was crossing the road from left to right.

“The victim was thrown onto the road surface and suffered severe injuries, leading to her death at the scene,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He added that an alcohol screening test conducted on the SUV driver indicated that he was suspected of driving under the influence, exceeding the legal limit.

“The driver has been arrested and will be remanded to assist with further investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving causing death,” Abdul Rozak said.
