An elderly man was charged at the Seri Manjung Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday with the murder of a fellow resident at an elderly care home on Pangkor Island last week.
The accused, Ong Thean Sun, 73, only nodded to show he understood after the charge was read before Magistrate Fakhrul Razzi Abd Hamid. No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, Ong is accused of intentionally causing the death of Tan An Man, 73, at the Pangkor Elderly Care Management Organisation in Sungai Pinang Kecil between 12.40 pm and 1 pm on September 17.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nuranisah Ismah Muhammad Husaini prosecuted the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
The court fixed November 24 for mention of the case.
Earlier, media reports said the victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused and victim had been involved in a fight, but the motive is still under investigation.
