‘Academically Gifted’ 16-Year-Old Boy Sought Advice From AI Before Taking Own Life

Date:

A heartbreaking inquest has revealed that a 16-year-old boy sought advice from the AI chatbot ChatGPT on how to take his own life just hours before his death. Luca Walker, described as academically gifted and deeply compassionate, died on May 4, 2025, after stepping onto a train track, sparking renewed scrutiny over the role of artificial intelligence in sensitive situations.

The hearing at Winchester Coroner’s Court was told that Luca had managed to bypass safety safeguards built into the chatbot by claiming his questions were for “research purposes”. Despite built-in prompts encouraging users to seek help, investigators found the system continued engaging with his queries, which police later described as “chilling and upsetting reading”. The case highlights growing global concerns about how emerging technologies are handling mental health-related interactions.

Luca, from Yateley, had recently completed his studies at the prestigious Lord Wandsworth College before continuing at Sixth Form College Farnborough. Known among friends and family as gentle, kind and thoughtful, he maintained close relationships and appeared outwardly content. However, the inquest revealed he had been quietly battling what his parents later described as an “invisible struggle”, underscoring how mental health challenges can often go unnoticed even in supportive environments.

On the morning of his death, Luca left home under the impression he was heading to his part-time job as a lifeguard. Digital forensics later uncovered 14 farewell messages written on his phone to loved ones. Testimonies revealed that past experiences, including a toxic “bully or be bullied” culture at school and the earlier death of a fellow student on train tracks, had deeply affected him. The coroner noted these traumatic events likely contributed to his declining mental state, reinforcing wider concerns about the long-term psychological impact of bullying and unresolved grief.

Detective Sergeant Garry Knight of the British Transport Police confirmed that Luca had been using ChatGPT around 12.30am on the day of his death, asking for specific guidance. While the chatbot did attempt to suggest external help such as Samaritans, it was reported that these safeguards were circumvented. Coroner Christopher Wilkinson acknowledged the limitations of current systems, expressing concern over the rapidly expanding influence of AI but noting that broader regulatory solutions remain beyond the scope of individual cases.

The inquest also referenced another tragic case in the United States, where a teenager allegedly interacted with AI before taking his own life, further fuelling debate over the responsibility of technology platforms. Experts and authorities increasingly warn that while such tools can be beneficial, they may also present risks if not adequately controlled, particularly for vulnerable users.

In a statement, OpenAI expressed deep condolences to Luca’s family and reiterated its commitment to improving safeguards. The company stated it has been enhancing its systems to better detect emotional distress, de-escalate harmful conversations and guide users towards professional help, often working alongside mental health experts.

Luca’s family paid tribute to him as a “kind, sensitive and calm young man” who was surrounded by love and support. Despite his outward positivity, the tragedy has brought to light the complexities of mental health struggles among young people, as well as the urgent need for continued awareness, early intervention and stronger protective measures in both real-world and digital spaces.
