AKPS Proposes Firearms And Bulletproof Vests For Officers After Shooting Incident

Date:

A shooting incident involving the official vehicle of the Commander of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam is believed to be connected to the agency’s recent firm enforcement measures at the northern border.

AKPS Director-General Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the possibility of retaliation from affected parties cannot be ruled out, as intensified operations may have disrupted long-standing illegal activities.

He acknowledged that threats against officers had been anticipated, revealing that during a briefing to commanders four weeks ago, he had cautioned personnel to remain vigilant against potential criminal intimidation.

“We were aware of the risks, but we did not expect matters to escalate to this level,” he told reporters when met at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex yesterday.

Young Agency Under Pressure

Formed just 14 months ago, AKPS has carried out its mandate with what Mohd Shuhaily described as commitment and integrity, inevitably placing pressure on those involved in unlawful cross-border activities.

“For a relatively new agency to face such threats suggests that our enforcement has created significant impact. When illegal activities become more difficult to carry out, there will naturally be reactions,” he said.

He stressed that throughout its short existence, AKPS officers have executed their duties with sincerity and professionalism — a factor he believes may have curtailed smuggling operations that once operated with relative ease.

Record RM3.1 Million Seizure

Mohd Shuhaily disclosed that AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam recently recorded its highest-ever seizure, confiscating various smuggled goods worth more than RM3.1 million during an integrated operation conducted from January 15 to February 15.

The achievement marked a historic milestone for the Bukit Kayu Hitam entry point, but he admitted such successes also heighten operational risks.

PM Calls For Security Improvements

The Director-General said Anwar Ibrahim had contacted him early yesterday morning, requesting updates and suggestions on how the agency’s operations could be strengthened.

Among the improvements proposed is equipping AKPS officers with firearms, as they are currently not issued with them. He also highlighted the need for bulletproof vests and enhanced safety gear to better protect personnel on duty.

He noted that AKPS continues to receive strong backing from the Prime Minister and Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in reinforcing border security measures.

Commander Stable And Determined

Mohd Shuhaily confirmed that the commander involved, Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, is safe and in stable condition. He described the officer as well-trained and composed, capable of managing high-pressure situations.

“He remains calm, committed and determined to continue carrying out his responsibilities for national security,” he said.

The incident occurred at about 5.40am yesterday when the Proton X70 driven by Mohd Nasaruddin was shot at near the slip road leading to Masjid Al Muhajirin in Bukit Kayu Hitam, approximately one kilometre from the Malaysia–Thailand border.

No Impact On Public Access

In a separate statement issued in Putrajaya, AKPS stressed that the incident would not dampen the morale of its personnel. Instead, it said the episode would further strengthen the agency’s resolve to safeguard national borders with courage and professionalism.

The agency also assured the public that the case is isolated and does not involve civilians. Operations at the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS Complex continue as usual.

AKPS reiterated that any threats, intimidation or attacks against national security personnel constitute serious criminal offences. Firm action will be taken under the law against those attempting to undermine the safety, peace and sovereignty of the country’s entry points.
