Authorities Investigate After Group Seen Consuming Engine Oil For ‘Stamina’

Date:

A video circulating on social media has sparked widespread concern after it showed a group of youths and adults in Makassar allegedly consuming engine oil in turns, reportedly in an attempt to boost stamina and physical strength.

The footage, which has since gone viral, shows individuals directly drinking the vehicle lubricant without any safety precautions or scientific justification, prompting shock and strong reactions from netizens who described the act as extremely dangerous.

Setiausaha Majlis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) Sulawesi Selatan, Prof Muammar Bakry, condemned the act, stating that such behaviour is prohibited in Islam and poses severe risks to health. He stressed that consuming toxic substances violates the principle of preserving life and well-being under Islamic teachings.

Health authorities in Makassar have since mobilised teams to trace and monitor those involved in the incident. Officials said the move aims not only to ensure their safety but also to educate the public on the dangers of ingesting toxic industrial substances.

Medical experts warned that engine oil contains hazardous chemicals such as heavy metals and toxic additives that can cause serious harm if ingested. Short-term exposure may lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, and organ damage, while long-term exposure could affect the nervous system and increase cancer risks.

A toxicologist from Hasanuddin University, Dr Lestari, said there is no scientific evidence supporting claims that engine oil consumption enhances stamina or energy. Instead, she emphasised that the practice is highly dangerous and potentially fatal.

The incident has drawn strong criticism online, with many urging the public not to imitate such reckless behaviour and calling for greater awareness on the risks of consuming non-food chemical substances.
