A 69-year-old blind German man was unaware that his wife had taken her own life until a neighbor discovered her body at their home in Khlong Udom Chonlachon on Tuesday evening.
Police were called to the two-storey house at 6:30 p.m., where they found the body of the 53-year-old Thai woman, who had hanged herself inside. Her husband, blind in both eyes due to a car accident, was sitting at a table outside at the time.
Neighbors told police that the couple had rented the house for over a year. The woman worked as a taxi driver in Bangkok, usually for two to three days at a time, and prepared meals for her husband before leaving. When she was away for longer periods, neighbors would check in and cook for him.
On the day of the incident, the husband called out for a neighbor to turn on the lights, revealing his wife’s body inside.
The husband told authorities that his wife had returned home that morning distressed following a traffic accident, with the other party demanding 40,000 baht in compensation, which the couple could not pay.
Officials visited the home on Wednesday to assess the man’s situation and discovered that his visa had expired. He has lived in Thailand for 16 years on a German pension and expressed a desire to remain in the country. Authorities plan to contact his relatives, while neighbors continue to provide him with meals and support.
