Police have identified a man found dead in a drain along Jalan Kedah here today as a 37-year-old local.
Timur Laut district deputy police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said initial investigations at the scene revealed that the man was a homeless individual who had been staying in the nearby area.
He said police received information about the incident from the public at 9.26am.
“The victim was found unconscious in a drain outside a premises along the road,” he said in a statement.
He added that checks confirmed the man was a Malaysian citizen with an address in Kapar, Selangor.
Further investigations at the scene and on the body found no signs of foul play.
The body has been sent to the Forensic Medicine Department at Hospital Pulau Pinang (HPP) for a post-mortem.
The case has been classified as sudden death, and a sudden death report has been opened for further investigation.
Previously, it was reported that the body was discovered by cleaning workers at the location.
Police also found several items believed to belong to the victim, including a blanket and a seat mat placed near the shoplot area opposite the drain where the body was found.
