The body of the second victim who drowned while swimming at Pantai Sura Tengah here was recovered early this morning, bringing the search and rescue operation to a close.
Dungun Fire and Rescue Station chief Shahrizal Samsuddin said the body of Mohd Fazir Shafie, 37, was found at around 12.35am, approximately one kilometre from the location where he was reported missing.
“The victim’s body was discovered stranded along the shoreline by rescue teams. He was confirmed dead by a medical officer before being handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
Following the discovery, the search and rescue operation was officially concluded at about 1.10am.
Dungun district police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir confirmed the recovery when contacted. She said the body was later sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem examination.
“The autopsy will be conducted this morning, after which the body will be released to the family for burial,” she said.
In the incident at around 10.27am yesterday, Mohd Fazir was believed to have attempted to save his sister, Nor Baizura Shafie, 38, who had drowned while swimming at the beach. Both were swept away by strong currents.
