A video has recently gone viral online showing a young boy casually walking across a beautifully crafted kolam decoration inside a shopping mall — completely destroying the intricate artwork in seconds. The clip has since sparked a heated debate among netizens, dividing opinions over who should take responsibility for the incident.
In the footage, the boy can be seen stepping right onto the kolam, smudging and scattering its colorful patterns, while nearby adults appeared unaware of the damage being done. The artist behind the kolam, who seemed heartbroken, later commented under the viral post saying, “It took us two nights to complete this kolam…”
Many Malaysians flooded the comment section with strong opinions. Some blamed the parents for not supervising their child, writing, “Mak bapa dia tu buat apa? Mata tutup ke?” and “Don’t normalize ‘budak-budak biasalah tu’ — it’s your responsibility how you raise your child!”
Others, however, sympathized with the boy, saying he likely didn’t understand the significance or fragility of the artwork. One thoughtful commenter shared, “I wouldn’t blame the little boy at all. To him, the kolam probably just looked like something he could walk on without ruining it. The artists poured in so much love, passion and time to create such a stunning and eye-catching kolam. The management should have placed vases or barriers to prevent this from happening.”
As the discussion continues to spread across social media, many netizens expressed appreciation for the artists’ effort and hoped that mall managements would take better measures to protect cultural art displays — ensuring that the beauty and meaning behind such traditional creations are preserved and respected.
