Cambodia Duck Egg Vendor Loses Trays After Driver Destroys Them Over Unpaid RM138 Compensation

Date:

A duck egg vendor in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, saw her trays of eggs destroyed after accidentally brushing a female driver’s car and being unable to pay the full US$30 (RM138) compensation demanded.

The incident, which occurred on February 27, quickly went viral online and sparked debates over the treatment of working-class citizens in Cambodia.

According to reports, the vendor, riding a three-wheeled motorcycle alongside the woman, accidentally hit the car’s right rear door, causing minor damage. She only had US$20 (RM92) on hand and asked the driver to wait for her father, who was two hours away, to bring the remaining money. The driver refused and then threw the vendor’s duck eggs onto the street, claiming the broken eggs would serve as compensation.

A video shared by Cambodian journalist Sovann Rithy shows the vendor pleading on the ground as the driver, dressed in white, empties dozens of duck eggs. Rithy described it as a “sad story” and said the situation could have been avoided with understanding from both sides.

Netizens condemned the driver’s actions, criticising her for disrespecting a working-class vendor and lacking basic moral decency. Phnom Penh police confirmed they have contacted the driver following the incident.
