Cargo Train Derailment After Explosion Kills At Least 24 People

Date:

At least 24 people were killed and 82 others injured after a powerful explosion caused a cargo train to derail in southwestern Pakistan on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported, citing officials and local media.

According to 24 News, the blast occurred on railway tracks in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, targeting a train heading towards the city.

Gunfire was also heard following the explosion, according to reports.

A spokesperson for Quetta Civil Hospital said the injured were taken to medical facilities, while a state of emergency was declared to handle the situation.

Babar Yousafzai, a special assistant to the provincial interior department, told reporters that security and rescue teams rushed to the scene as authorities worked to determine the nature of the blast.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Balochistan, a resource-rich province and a key route for the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has long faced militant activity, with separatist groups demanding independence for the region.
