Child Opening Car Door Triggers Six-Vehicle Crash On Jalan Tun Razak

Date:

An accident involving six vehicles along Jalan Tun Razak on Tuesday has been traced to an incident in which a young child accidentally opened the rear door of a moving car, police have confirmed.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the crash occurred at about 6.15pm and involved four cars and two motorcycles travelling from the Kampung Pandan roundabout towards the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC).

Initial investigations found that a two-year-old girl, who was seated at the rear passenger area on a relative’s lap, suddenly opened the left rear door of the vehicle. Police believe the child safety lock was not activated, allowing the door to be opened from inside the car.

“The sudden opening of the door caused a Suzuki V-Strom SX motorcycle, which was travelling between lanes, to collide with the door. The rider then lost control and crashed into several other vehicles,” Mohd Zamzuri said in a statement today.

He added that a second motorcyclist, riding a CFMOTO 675 NK and travelling behind the first rider, was unable to avoid the incident and was also involved in the collision. Incidents involving unsecured passengers have once again highlighted the importance of basic vehicle safety measures, especially when children are on board.

The 25-year-old rider of the Suzuki V-Strom SX sustained a fractured left arm and is currently receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. Meanwhile, the 30-year-old CFMOTO rider suffered minor injuries.

Drivers of the four other vehicles involved — a Toyota Corolla Cross, Honda City, Volkswagen Polo and Perodua Bezza — were not injured in the crash.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. Police have urged members of the public or witnesses with further information to assist investigations by contacting the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or any nearby police station.
