The Kinmen Coast Guard has intercepted a suspected Chinese man attempting to swim across from China to Taiwan’s Kinmen Island. According to the Coast Guard Administration’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch, personnel from the 12th (Kinmen) Patrol Area detected the man at around 10:04 a.m. on October 14 using maritime surveillance technology. The suspect was spotted about 0.8 nautical miles north of Tianmoshan—just 0.1 nautical miles outside Kinmen’s restricted waters—drifting toward the island.
A patrol vessel was immediately dispatched to the area, where officers apprehended the man and brought him back to Liaoluo Harbor for questioning. The case has since been handed over to the Kinmen District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
Footage from the scene shows the suspect, a Chinese national, wearing black socks and dress pants while floating in the sea with two buoyant floats strapped to his body. He appeared exhausted from prolonged swimming and was quickly pulled to safety by Coast Guard officers.
The Coast Guard noted that due to the shallow and narrow waters around Kinmen, response time for maritime operations must be swift. The 12th Patrol Area has therefore maintained strict surveillance and rapid deployment measures. Any suspicious movement detected by monitoring systems is immediately tracked and investigated, ensuring no unlawful intrusion goes unchecked. Officials said the quick detection and interception in this case demonstrated the effectiveness of their integrated maritime intelligence and enforcement system.
The Coast Guard further stated that they do not rule out the possibility that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) may be using illegal crossings like this as part of cognitive warfare—aimed at undermining public morale in Taiwan at minimal cost. In response to the growing “gray-zone” provocations from China, the Coast Guard has strengthened coastal and maritime defense operations, enhanced monitoring technologies, and pursued additional funding to bolster surveillance capabilities—ensuring national security and social stability.
