Coal Spill Hits Terengganu Beach, Visitors Shocked by Blackened Shoreline!

Date:

Pantai Teluk Kalong near Chukai has been polluted by black solid material believed to be coal after a drifting barge struck rocks and ran aground along the coastline.

Ahmad Amadi Ali, 29, a visitor from Paka, Dungun, said he was shocked to find coal scattered along 500 metres of shoreline during his visit today. “I cancelled my plan to swim as I was worried the seawater had been polluted and could affect my skin,” he told Bernama.

Ahmad Firdaus Che Yahaya, 43, a local trader, said he first noticed the coal-laden barge drifting near the beach last Thursday. The barge ran aground over the past two days, and black patches were visible on the seabed several metres from the shore. “The beach started to be covered with coal as the waves carried it ashore during high tide,” he added.

Terengganu EXCO Razali Idris said the marine and environment departments have been instructed to take immediate action to clean the popular tourist beach. He also noted that Pantai Telaga Simpul has reportedly been affected by coal pollution.

Terengganu Environment Department Director Hamzah Mohamad said while coal is not classified as scheduled waste, authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure visitor safety. “The department has engaged with the barge owner’s representatives, including discussions on beach cleanup efforts,” he said.
