A coffee shop assistant was fined RM1,500 by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to stealing a 12-year-old schoolgirl’s underwear from a clothesline at a house in Taman Kota, Yong Peng.
Magistrate Arun Noval Dass imposed the sentence on Wong Yong Xin, 28, who admitted to the charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code. The court also ordered a three-month jail term in default of payment, which the accused subsequently settled.
The offence took place at around 11.30am on March 18, when the victim’s mother spotted a man taking the items from the family’s outdoor clothes rack and placing them into a bag. A police report was lodged immediately after the incident.
Following investigations, police arrested the suspect in front of a grocery shop. He later confessed to the offence and failed to provide any reasonable explanation for possessing the stolen items.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed, while the accused was represented by legal aid counsel Noormaahani Rais from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
