A Florida father is being hailed as a hero after saving the lives of four children — and his own son — during a violent standoff at their home in Deltona, about 30 miles north of Orlando.
Authorities say 22-year-old Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez was arrested on November 2 after allegedly injuring one person and threatening to kill four children inside the residence. When deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they found the suspect’s father outside the home, physically blocking his son from entering and possibly harming anyone inside.
Body camera footage released by police shows the tense scene as the father pleaded with deputies not to shoot when they aimed their weapons at his son, who was holding a large hunting knife. Nieves-Gonzalez eventually dropped the knife after being convinced to surrender, but continued to resist — cursing, spitting at officers, and flipping them off. Deputies then used a Taser to subdue him before placing him in handcuffs.
Only after the arrest did the father reveal he had been stabbed in the back of the head by his son during the confrontation. He was treated for his injuries and is expected to recover.
Nieves-Gonzalez was booked into custody and faces multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, four counts of child abuse, aggravated battery, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer.
Authorities say the father’s quick and selfless actions prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.
